The historic hearings on medical marijuana last week in Harrisburg on HB 1393 have created a wave of editorial support in favor of therapeutic cannabis in Pennsylvania.
Rep. Mark Cohen first introduced the bill in April while the non-profit group PA4MMJ coordinated a grass-roots effort that has resulted in significant public support. It was the Daily Review of Towanda, The Pocono Record and the Philadelphia Inquirer who immediately endorsed the bill after a 4/29/09 Harrisburg press conference.
Pocono Record - "Legislative endorsement of medical marijuana lags behind professional opinion. Public officials don't want to seem "soft on drugs." But the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Public Health Association, the American Nurses Association and the American Bar Association have all advocated allowing patients access to medical marijuana." The media covered the December 2, 2009 hearings on HB 1393 before the PA House Health and Human Services Committee in a serious tone. Several additional and quite strong editorial endorsements have followed:

The Daily Times of Delaware County Editorial: Medical marijuana testimony worth hearing
"No one has ever overdosed on marijuana, but many have overdosed on the medications marijuana would replace. Medical experts think this naturally grown substance can help people suffering from pain. Shouldn’t legislators listen to doctors when deciding what is in the best interests of patients suffering from chronic pain?" Read full

Legalizing pot is an act of compassion
"Pennsylvania should legalize medicinal marijuana as a simple matter of compassion for patients who could benefit from its use. The recent hearing was a valuable step in that direction because it established a tone for debate rooted in science and realistic analysis of the likely social impact, rather than on emotion and obsolete myths. Cohen should continue to press the issue." Read full
Paul Carpenter of the Allentown Morning-Call took notice of the John Wilson trial and addressed the medical marijuana bills in progress in PA and New Jersey in his column It is time for medical marijuana "Marijuana -- less addictive than coffee or alcohol -- is widely regarded as an effective way to lessen the horrors of MS, glaucoma, cancer and other ailments."
