The Obama administration is making public service and volunteerism one of the top priorities during their administration. With so many families struggling during the recession, it’s important that those who can give back to the community, do give back. One example of the administration's commitment to the nonprofit and volunteer sector is Michelle Obama delivering the keynote speech at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service which will be held in San Francisco from June 22-24th.
While the conference is being held in San Francisco, the effects will reach as far as the Washington, DC metro area. Bon Jovi, Matthew McConaughey and a host of other high profile celebrities will also be on hand to support the cause. This conference is one of largest events to bring together nonprofits, businesses and the government to discuss meeting public needs.
During the conference, Obama will launch the United We Serve Campaign to stress national participation in volunteering and helping to provide public service. The program will conclude on September 11th on the National Day of Service. This day was instituted in the Edward M Kennedy Service America Act which was passed back in the Spring. The United We Serve initiative is facilitated by the government program - Corporation for National and Community Service.
Examples of the United We Serve Campaign in the DC, MD and VA area included a nonprofit volunteer who volunteered to transport two Vietnam veterans to a Washington area VA hospital during rush hour traffic.

How about 'No' Scott? What a joke - those who can give back should give back. It's as if getting up and going to work every day so that we can pay our taxes to people who turn around and give it to other people for "volunteering" to paint lawn furniture or pick weeds from a vacant lot doesn't qualify as "giving back". Oh, I have an idea! How about we all stop paying taxes for a year, and go do volunteer work. Wonder if they'd think we were doing our part then. JERKS!
