Award-winning Gallery City Without Walls Addresses Artist and Community Needs

City Without Walls (cWOW), a not-for-profit urban gallery of emerging arts that advances the careers of artists while building the audience of contemporary art, will be honored by the City of Newark as a “Green Leader” at a celebration for the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day at Newark Bears Stadium on Thursday, April 22, 2010.

At the Earth Day celebration, The City of Newark and the Newark Bears will honor Newark’s “Green Leaders” on the field, saluting business, non-profit, and community organizations that are working to “green” Newark.

“It has been a goal of my administration over the past four years to provide quality parks and recreation in every ward and neighborhood. In addition, my administration has adopted eco-friendly practices and policies, to address global climate change. Our Earth Day programs will unite our administration, our non-profit partners, and our residents in an alliance to create a cleaner and greener Newark,” Mayor Booker said. “I urge all residents to join us on Earth Day. Together we can help save our planet and build a stronger, safer, prouder City.”

“We are so thrilled that our efforts are being recognized in this special way. It is a real tribute to the significant impact of our volunteers, supporters, and staff. We work very hard to demonstrate how art and technology can help build communities, careers, and contemporary culture in Newark and beyond!” said Ben Goldman, Executive Director City Without Walls.

cWOW is New Jersey's oldest not-for-profit alternative art space, in continuous operation in the City of Newark since 1975. Its two-fold mission offers career development opportunities to new and emerging artists, while providing the public a chance to understand and enjoy challenging contemporary art. Funded in part by the Prudential Foundation, the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, and the New Jersey State Council on the Arts/Department of State, cWOW operates a professional fine art gallery that showcases the work of over 100 emerging artists per year in 10 to 14 on-site, off-site, online and traveling exhibitions.

cWOW offers programs and services designed to address artist and community needs that are not served by other sources. cWOW’s ArtReach education program pairs promising high school art students with working-artist mentors, and offers other students valuable experience through gallery internships. Newark New Media is cWOW’s artist residency and apprenticeship program at the cutting edge of art and technology. The gallery maintains the largest and most active artist registry of any gallery in the State offers discounted photography, digital printing and framing. cWOW arranges large-scale art commissions for public and private spaces, and advocates for artist rights and artist-friendly public policy. It also provides information about artist opportunities and technical assistance.

In addition to being honored by the City of Newark, The Partnership in Philanthropy selected cWOW for the 2010 Thomas H. Kean Achievement Award for outstanding progress of mission, vision, programs and services. The Benny Andrews Foundation awarded cWOW two watercolors by the renowned Harlem Renaissance artist Palmer Hayden for cWOW's innovative use of arts education to connect with urban youth. The works will be included in the African American Fine Art Auction at Swann Galleries in New York City in October.
