Tsunami warning alerts San Diego County

Tsunami warnings were issued for San Diego County and other parts of the region this Saturday.  Following on the heels of an earthquake east of the Japanese island of Okinawa, a monster 8.8 quake shook the sea floor near Chile.  Although hundreds of thousands of structures have been damaged and over two hundred people have died, the advance warning for the tsunami that hit Chile allowed many to escape the fate of those caught in other incidents in recent memory in Southeast Asia and Haiti.

Hearts and prayers go out to the unfortunate victims of the latest string of disasters.  For many looking on, it confers a sense of gratitude for one's own good fortune and respect for the resilience of man.

Nature finds dramatic ways to remind the human species of how connected it is.  In this case, a slight movement of a giant slab of earth thousands of miles away can ripple across the ocean through the gorgeous islands of Hawaii to threaten the shores of coastal Southern California.  As the transnational forces at work in the process of globalization continue to link mankind in a web of overlapping economies and politics, nature displays how foundational this process really is.  Even though San Diego has escaped harm, residents in this city, our nation's southwest jewel, gape in horrible wonder at the Pacific Ocean's power to whip up real fear and submerge it abruptly again.

My favorite line, one worth remembering and quoting. "As the transnational forces at work in the process of globalization continue to link mankind in a web of overlapping economies and politics, nature displays how foundational this process really is."
