Industrial pioneers Skinny Puppy, one of most influential musical acts to ever step out of Canada, are headlining at the Nokia Theatre Times Square this upcoming Tuesday, November 17. Led by founding members Nivek Ogre and cEvin Key, the long-running, Vancouver-based band is returning to the stage together after Ogre spent much of the past year touring and recording with his side band, ohGr.
Known for their wildly theatrical live shows, Skinny Puppy will likely use props and have an intricate stage set. Although their infamously hard-living early years are behind them, the band's new lifestyle has not softened the intensity of their music, as heard on their politically-tinged most recent album, Mythmaker. A new album is set for a 2010 release, and it reportedly shares a title with Skinny Puppy's current tour, In Solvent See.
Along with bands like KMFDM and Ministry, Skinny Puppy paved the way for the industrial artists such as Nine Inch Nails to break through to mainstream audiences. Despite having songs like "Tormentor" and "Spasmolytic" ingrained in every industrial fanatic's consciousness, Skinny Puppy never found the radio and chart success of some of their followers. Still, the band seems content with their cult following. "That’s what culture does, unfortunately," Ogre recently told Beyond Race Magazine's Amy Dupcak. "It takes people, embraces them, gives them a lot of money, and assimilates them. I’ve never had that...and it doesn’t matter, I’ll still be here.”
Tickets for Skinny Puppy at the Nokia Theatre Times Square are $27.00. Doors are at 7pm, with the show scheduled to start at 8pm. Relapse signees Vverevvolf Grehv will be opening the show.
