The Nation Hurricane Center (NHC) say the track of Earl will come very close to the Outer Banks of North Carolina and that has prompted officials to order mandatory evacuations of the entire county that mostly comprises barrier islands.
As of 11:00am Hurricane Earl has sustained winds of 140 mph with hurricane force winds that range 90 miles from the center and tropical storm force winds that range 230 mile from the center. Earl has a minimum central pressure of 932 mb making him more powerful than Hurricane Hugo. The eye of Hurricane Earl is 25 nautical miles in diameter.
We have more systems out in the Atlantic that we are monitoring, Tropical Storm Fiona, Tropical Depression Gaston and a very large tropical wave just off the coast of Africa.

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 with about 80% of tropical storms and hurricanes developing during August, September, and October. In a typical year, 11 named storms develop and 6 of these become hurricanes. On average, some portion the District is affected by at least one named storm every other year, a hurricane every 3 years, and a major hurricane every 6-7 years.
