Technology has been ruining relationships since the advent of voicemail, email, and instant messaging. How many friends do you know that have left a drunken message on their girlfriend/boyfriend's phone at 4am and then break up in the morning? Or the email bashing the boss that got forwarded to the entire work list, ending in the sender getting fired? Technology is wonderful, but dangerous.
Twitter is a service that collects different user's presence messages, 140 characters or less. These short messages are called 'tweets' and they show up in chronological order on your twitter homepage. This allows users to track those they follow and see what they are doing at an exact moment in time. For instance, while I write this at 3:25 EST, Jon Favreau is recording a voice for G Force, Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute on 'The Office') is pitching a movie at NALA, and MC Hammer is asking his followers about their plans for the weekend. Twitter has made the world feel a little bit smaller.
John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston broke up a few months ago, and Perez Hilton is posturing that it is because of his Twitter addiction. Mayer tweets everything, from the new songs he is working on to what he had for breakfast. Even though this is a bit annoying, it is something most tech-savvy couples deal with. My boyfriend is on his Blackberry quite a lot... not twittering, but he is still punching at those buttons. I am not annoyed by his attention to the small gizmo because I have my own technology addictions. I twitter (not more than a few a day), am on facebook, and am always fooling with an application on my iPhone. It's a fact of modern life, and couples learn to adapt. If Aniston and Mayer couldn't get over a few tweets, then their relationship was structurally flawed from the beginning. Sorry about your breakup, but don't blame it on twitter!
