Earlier this year, we profiled breakout d-man Drew Doughty of the LA Kings and hinted to likely possible future international play for him. Yesterday, this forecast was realized as Steve Yzerman (GM of the Canadian Olympic hockey team) named Doughty as one of the seven defensemen they will bring to Vancouver in February.
This pick was much to the chagrin of the Calgary Flames defensive core (Jay Bouwmeester, Dion Phaneuf and Robyn Regher were left off the team), and Washington Capitals' (and league leading blue line scorer) Mike Green.
There were no easy decisions for Yzerman in picking this team, as Canada could field 2-3 competitive teams for the Olympics. Interestingly, Doughty was the 2nd overall pick in 2008, while the 1st overall pick Steven Stamkos was left off the roster.
Doughty's 9 goals, 17 assists and 26 points this season was enough to impress the Canadian hockey leaders, who consider Doughty to be the future of the Canadian blueline. He may not see a ton of ice time in Vancouver, but it will be a great learning experience as this is probably not his last Olympic selection.
