Notable remaining free agents

Sergei Zubov could be yours. (US Presswire)

When the free agency period opened this year, most of the big names were swept up almost immediately. Teams knew who they wanted to target, and they went after them. However, there are still some names left on the market worth noting. Not necessarily the best players remaining, but notable players remaining. Also, I would like to preface this list by saying I am using ESPN.com's free agent tracker to find these names, and I cannot vouch for the accuracy of their list. For example, David Booth is still listed as an RFA even though he was one of the first guys to sign a new contract this offseason. Anyway, on with the list.

Todd Bertuzzi: Sure, he's injury prone and he is not the player he once was. However, if a team is looking to roll the dice on a guy who could potentially bring them around 20 goals as a second line scorer, Bertuzzi is worth a shot.

Marc-Andre Bergeron: Bergeron is a defenseman who can score. In 72 games last season, he had 14 goals, seven of those on the power play. He's not a terribly good defenseman, but he's not exactly a sieve at the blueline, so if a team is looking for somebody to play the point on a power play unit, Bergeron could be the guy.

Martin Biron: Far and away the best goalie left on the market. He's a good goalie with plenty of experience in the net. He's only 31. Why hasn't somebody signed him? There's not team that at the very least needs a solid backup? Atlanta doesn't need Kari Lehtonen insurance? The Stars want to use Marty Turco less this season, why not sign Biron then? I don't know where the negative stigma on Biron comes from.

Mike Comrie: Comrie may have had an off year last season, but the year prior he scored 21 goals and 49 points. He is injury prone and his plus/minus is usually pretty poor, but as a third line center (or a decent second line center) Comrie would be a nice signing.

Manny Fernandez: If Biron can't get signed, then Fernandez might be in trouble. He'd make a top notch backup for somebody.

Dominic Moore: Moore had a career year last season, which consisted of 13 goals and 45 points. However, he is a very good defensive forward. Maybe he won't score as many points next season, but he will play some fine defense and he's only 28.

Michael Peca: Peca will provide what Moore does, only probably with less scoring and more injury risk. Mike Peca has become the poor man's Dominic Moore. Time is a harsh mistress.

Dennis Seidenberg: While it seems fairly likely Seidenberg will re-sign with Carolina, it is by no means a guarantee. He provides a fair amount of assists, particularly on the power play.

Petr Sykora: Sykora will not be back with the Penguins last season, and for some reason I am getting the feeling that I may have read a report that Sykora is headed to the KHL, or at least considering it. Sykora had 25 goals last season, and 300 in his career, which took me by surprise. He's scored at least 20 goals every season since the 1998-1999 campaign. If a team needs some secondary scoring, he'd be a nice signing. Plus, he's a former Detroit Viper.

Alex Tanguay: In an injury shortened campaign, Tanguay managed 16 goals and 25 assists last season. Like Sykora, he provides solid secondary scoring. He's also a bit younger and before last season had never failed to play at least 69 games in a season so I wouldn't consider him injury prone.

Sergei Zubov: He's 38. He only played in 10 games last season. However, when healthy he can be one of the best defenseman in the NHL. Or at least he could, I don't know what he can do now. I do believe that healthy he could be at the very least a good blueliner, which is something every team needs.

Those are just some of the names left on the market. Teams looking to fill a need still have options at all positions. Before the season begins, most of these guys, if not all of them, will be signed somewhere, even if it is the KHL. Free agency may have slowed down, but it's not over yet.
