NFL Draft 101: What should the Buffalo Bills do with their first round draft pick?

The Buffalo Bills would love to draft their future franchise QB with the ninth overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. However, it does not look like they will get a chance to draft him there. It looks like Sam Bradford and Jimmy Clausen will be off the board by that point. That means the Bills will have to address other needs for now.

Many have their primary need as Left Tackle, but since they signed OT Cornell Green in free agency, it seems that their primary need on the Offensive line is actually at RT. Given the surprise retirement of Brad Butler.

That seems to make Trent Williams a likely choice, since he played a lot of his College career at the RT spot. Sure the Bills have used several high draft picks on their O line recently, but the rebuild job is not quite done yet. Adding Williams would be a big step in the right direction for this team.

It would also allow Williams, along with Andy Levitre and Erik Wood a change to gel together as they grow into their NFL positions. Having Green in the mix gives these young players some veteran leadership to help mold their NFL careers. In many ways this is the most logical choice.

However it seems that the Bills are going to switch to a 3-4 defense in 2010, so we could make an effective argument that hey will try to find a big DT to anchor the middle of that new defensive scheme.

If the Bills were to go that route it seems likely that they would draft Dan Williams of Tennessee. At 6-2 and 329 lbs he has the size and power to play nose tackle at the NFL level.

Dan played some NT at Tennessee, and is considered him to be the third best DT in this draft. It would not be a huge stretch for the Bills to add their NT of the future with the 9th overall pick.

Many compare Williams to Ryan Pickett the NT of the Green bay Packers, and it would make logical sense for the Bills to go this route. However, no effective argument can be made to address their other needs with this pick.
