2010 Detroit Lions draft needs

Sometimes it really sucks top be a Detroit Lions fan, the NFL season in Detroit ends a little bit sooner then it does in other NFL seasons, but on the positive side it gives the Detroit lions and their fans an extra few months to think about the NFL draft.

As it stand right now the Lions would have the fourth overall pick in the 210 draft. So the question becomes what does a tam that has won just two games over the last two NFL seasons need? The answer of course is everything, but that isn’t really productive.

The Lions spent the 2009 draft building up their offense. They took a franchise QB, a Tight End, and then addressed needs on their defense. However, to have any credibility with their own fans they will need to fully address their defense, or use all of their 2010 draft picks on offensive and defensive linemen.

The Matt Millen years have left this team void of any talented linemen on either side of the ball. For this team to improve they must now spend time and draft picks on these critical positions.

The best thing the Lions and their fans can hope for right now is for the Cleveland Browns, and St. Louis Rams to each win another game down the stretch. If all three teams finished with a 2-14 record, the Lions would end up with the second overall pick, since the first tie breaker for Draft position is strength of schedule, and they would have a better shot at the prize of the 2010 draft Ndamukong Suh.

Since the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted their QB in 2009, there is a chance they could go after Suh, but Notre Dame WR Golden Tate may be to big a treat for the Bucs to pass up. Since, both St. Louis and Cleveland may in the market for a QB, maybe Suh drops to four and the Lions can add one of the most impressive players in the 2010 draft.

If Suh is already gone by the time the Lions are on the clock, there are plenty of other impact players they can take. A quick look at the 2010 Big Board shows us that they could land DT Gerald McCoy, FS Taylor Mays, and OT Trent Williams.

In the end with a top five pick the Detroit Lions must find a mainstay that can help improve their terrible defense. In this, they seem pretty lucky as their seems to be several can’t miss defensive prospects in the 2010 draft.
