A safe haven for pets in a tiny town, in the middle of central Massachusetts is attempting to do something big. Really big. History making, Guinness Book of World Records big. If they pull it off, it could save thousands of pets lives and they need your help.
The Second Chance Animal Shelter in East Brookfield hopes thousands of dogs and cats (with their owners) line up on Sunday March, 29, 2009 because they’re going to attempt to break the world record for the largest vaccination clinic. That means they have to give more than 3,271 vaccinations for rabies and distemper in an eight-hour period.
To even get Guinness' attention took months. Shelter director, Sheryl Brackley spent hours filling out paperwork. First, a plan describing what they were attempting. Then she waited for the world record keeping giant to give her an initial thumbs up. Next Brackley got an application in the mail to help Guinness figure out which category the event should be grouped in. Finally she was accepted to compete in the largest vaccination clinic record category. "Lots of work! But, whether we break it or not, it is about helping the animals."
Brackley believes her shelter is the first to attempt something like this for pets. The current world record for this category belongs to a hospital that gave 3,271 flu vaccines. After the event Brackley has a mound more of paperwork to go in order for Guinness to certify the results.
The shots are only five bucks, but the event is costing the shelter $10,000 and organizers are hoping donations from the public will help defray the cost. Brackley said she’s seen pets suffering because their owner’s are hit hard by the bad economy. "We have heard and seen an increase in preventable diseases simply because people are not getting the routine vaccinations."
