Could your mattress be robbing you of sleep health? Buying a new mattress can be daunting

Mattresses are not something that you buy every day. If you are not in the market for a mattress right now, this is good information to print and save. Mattresses usually last for many years; and perhaps most folks wait far too long in replacing them for their sleep health.

Once you get a mattress "worn" in, it is hard to make a change until one morning you wake up feeling worst than you did before going to bed. If you wake up with aching muscles, cramps, and stiffness and your mattress has been around for a while, perhaps you need a new one.

The photo at the left  makes me think of the play with Carol Burnett, "The Princess and the Pea." Remember that one? A real princess can feel a pea under a ton of mattresses. We may not all claim princesshood; but we certainly know when there is a lump that keeps us awake, huh?

We constantly see ads on TV about the new innovations in mattresses - even one where a pitcher throws a raw egg at a mattress without it breaking; and then another saying that the coils are the best. However, the makers of the new impressionable foam say you can't live without theirs; while the sleep number beds are supposed to be the greatest since sliced bread. Most of the time you think you get what you pay for; but in the case of mattress buying that may not be true.

Here in Fayette County, a suburb of Atlanta, we have a mattress factory (The Original Mattress Factory) where you can see their workers on TV actually making them and it is amazing to see those huge machines sewing the cording around the edge. You can actually tour their factory and see the mattresses being made. They have a great web site which can teach you a lot about mattresses. Follow the tabs at the top for sizes, prices, etc.

In a world that is filled with hype, sales pitches, and choices what is a body to do - what mattress is best for each individual body so to speak? The above web site gives you a lot of good information which can help you make the right choice for you. The one below for Consumer Reports gives you even more things to think about when buying a mattress.

For years chiropractors said that a hard mattress was better than a soft one and now they say one that molds to your body in best - seems like they would be hot however. And if over the years they deteriorate like other foam products - there you are - an expensive mattress that once was soft; but now is hard from age. So much to think about.

Consumer reports say that this is one purchase you should make lying down. And also, you need to do your homework to save perhaps thousands of dollars from one store to the other.

Mattresses have come a long way from mats made of grass on the floor - to cords strung across a wooden frame with corn husk stuffing inside of ticking material - to a mattress stuffed with cotton balanced on steel coil springs. And then with the evolution of design, we get the coils inside the mattress with a wooden frame on the bottom. But ahhhh who can forget those feather beds at Grandma's?

Consumer Reports gives great advice for products on the market. Most of the time, their research and information is accurate and very helpful in making decisions before purchasing a product.

MATTRESSES:

HOW TO CHOOSE

WHAT WE FOUND

AND EIGHT MATTRESS MYSTERIES

1. Why do mattresses cost so much?

2. What's the difference between a $2,000 mattress and a $1,000 one?

3. Are those really cheap mattresses advertised in store ads worth considering?

.4. What's most likely to go wrong with a mattress?

5. How can someone return a defective mattress?

6. Will pairing an old foundation with a new mattress void the warranty?

7. What's the difference between the warranty and comfort guarantee?

8. Are all mattresses flame-retardant?

PS: The mattress police will not come knocking on your door if you tear off the "Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law" tag. You won't see flashing lights or hear sirens; but you may want to leave them there for any future reference. You might want to take a pen and write the date you purchased it and where you purchased it.

Always protect your mattresses with an adequate mattress pad - as for me and my house, we leave the plastic on that comes with it - we cover it with a heavy quilted mattress pad - really helps keep the mattress dry from those accidents than can happen when either the baby or puppy are not potty trained.
