With the 4th of July right around the corner, San Diegans and visitors wanting to see the annual La Jolla fireworks show can come on down.

San Diego Superior Court Judge Linda Quinn ruled Wednesday against a local attorney who had tried to stop the show from taking place.

"We're just relieved," said Adam Harris, president of the La Jolla Community Fireworks Foundation, in comments to the media. "We're looking forward to spending time with friends, family and the community. I think what many people don't realize is this is more than just La Jolla. This is about not just a town, but a city and beyond."

Encinitas-based Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation (CERF) sued the organizers of the La Jolla fireworks spectacle and others, claiming it wants to reduce water pollution they say is caused by pyrotechnics.

The group's lead attorney, Marco Gonzalez, informed Quinn during a hearing Wednesday that the city of San Diego did not issue proper permits for the fireworks show and that the show would lead to harm to marine mammals in the area.

Quinn, however, determined there was insufficient evidence to show that irreparable harm would be caused to environment.

Making it clear that the city of San Diego doesn't have a free pass, Quinn did say the city might want to "clean up its act" regarding how such events are permitted.

Should the city look into whether or not the fireworks due cause harm to the water and local marine life? Yes, there is nothing wrong with studying the matter.

Should members of the CERF and Gonzalez get lives and find better causes to tackle? Yes.

They need to stop trying to shove their ideology down everyone's throats. Perhaps they could have volunteered their time wasted on the fireworks matter and helped some homeless people over the last few weeks?

While I am all for protecting the environment when and where possible, I'm also for celebrating this holiday with fireworks as I have for four decades.

Thanks to Judge Linda Quinn, the show will go on.

More importantly, let's thank some people who are even more important.

Thank you to the men and women at home and abroad who protect our freedoms not just on the 4th of July, but 365 days a year.
