Hundreds turn out for the 12th annual KDMF race/walk

The rain and cloudy weather did not dampen the spirits of the more than three hundred and fifty people who attended this year’s twelfth annual Katie DeCubellis 5K Memorial Race.

“We are always amazed and grateful to the number of people who turn out to support KDMF. Each year the race has grown and with out all of the participants we would not be able to award scholarships, visit schools nation wide and most of all keep Katie’s memory alive,” says John and Meg DeCubellis.

The half-day event is a celebration of the life of Katie DeCubellis, a 13-year-old Narragansett resident who was tragically killed by a drunk driver on October 29, 1999. John and Meg DeCubellis, Katie’s parents, have since become outspoken advocates of responsible living.

To date, John and Meg have given presentations in schools and at conferences throughout the Country, reaching more than 100,000 students and adults. Their message focuses on the choices each of us make every day, and how those choices can and will shape our lives, for better or worse.

The race is another way to bring people together and help shape lives in a positive way.

“It was a lot of fun, especially because it was for a good cause,” says twenty year old Tim Calcagni. The pre-med URI student from Bradford placed first overall, running the 5K in just sixteen minutes and forty-two seconds.

This was also a winning weekend for thirty two year old Natalie Fish of Wakefield. The stay at home mom won two 5K’s this weekend, coming in overall as the first place female in twenty minutes and eight seconds. “It was truly an honor running in memory of Katie and I hope to return next year,” says Fish.

The race began and ended at Narragansett High School, followed by awards, prizes and food. For more information about KDMF including ways to receive scholarships log onto KDMF.org to see pictures of the race go to our Facebook Page under TheOfficialKDMF.

To date KDMF has given out a quarter of a million dollars to worthy causes.
