Bite of Seattle 2009, July 17-19 at the Seattle Center
I know that I've waxed nostalgic about New York City cuisine on more than one occasion ... the pizza, the bagels, the Indian food, and even the pre-packaged snack cakes.
But the more I get to know Seattle, the more I realize that New York isn't the center of the universe (shhh, don't tell). While New York's restaurants are out of this world, Seattle's got some tasty delights of its own, like the amazing seafood and surprisingly fabulous wine.
In the spirit of summer (and saluting Seattle), here are four upcoming food festivals you might want to check out:
1.) Burning Beast (July 12) - Drive out to Smoke Farm for an outdoor, fire-cooked feast/fundraiser where local celebrity chefs "prepare and master an assigned animal, vegetable and/or sea creature" using fire in the middle of the field. Throw in some picnic blankets and music, and you've got a festival! Tickets: $75
2.) Bite of Seattle (July 17-19) - Head to the Seattle Center for one of the city's longest and largest food festivals. Favorite local eateries set up stalls where visitors can sample the fare and vote on the best bites in Seattle. Last year, this food extravaganza attracted close to 500,000 people in three days. Free admission.
3.) Ballard SeafoodFest (July 25 & 26) - This year marks the 35th Annual Ballard SeafoodFest -- a community street festival complete with lots of fresh seafood, beer and wine gardens, and entertainment by local performers. Word on the street is, the Alder-Smoked Salmon BBQ has "some of the best salmon in town." Free admission.
4.)Share Our Strength's Taste of the Nation (July 30) - Taste of the Nation takes place in cities across the U.S., where guests "savor the finest food, spirits, and wine from the nation's hottest chefs and mixologists." This year, 100% of ticket sale proceeds go towards Share Our Strength's mission of ending childhood hunger. Tickets: $75 & $125.
