It was 1995, the last time a team score as many goals, when Andrew Cole netted five for Manchester Utd in a 9-0 win over Ipswich. Now with help from Jermain Defoe & Co, on Sunday November 22nd, Tottenham Hotspur get their biggest win in 32 years, after a 9-1 thrashing of Wigan at White Hart Lane.
6ft 7in Peter Crouch, opened up the scoring after just 9 mins, with a close range header, and although both teams had chances in the first 45 mins, it remained 1-0 at the half.
Spurs manager Harry Redknapp obviously some tricks up his sleeve with his half time team talk, and Spurs came out in the second half with all guns blazing. Defoe came close within 3 minutes, and then in the 51st minute he scored his first of five, when he got on the end of an Aaron Lennon cross, and beat Wigan's goalie with a superb half volley in to the top right corner of the net.
Within 3 minutes Defoe struck again as he netted from an acute angle from a long ball played by Palacios, that the Wigan defense couldn't clear.
Wigan got one back, as Scharner scored after an obvious handball, arguable as blatant and the recent Thierry Henry incident, which wasn't spotted by neither the ref or assistant ref.
Tottenham soon answered with another from Defoe, completing his hat-trick that was completed within a seven minute spell, the second fastest in Premier League history.
By this time Wigan were a defeated team, and Tottenham had no intentions of taking their foot of the gas. Lennon scored in the 64th minute, Defoe netted his fourth and fifth in the 69th and 87th minute, making him the only player ever to score 5 goals in one half.
Bentley's free kick in the 88th minute hit the crossbar, and to add to the Wigan keepers nighmare rebounded of Kirland and in to the net. Kranjcar finished the slaughter in the 93rd minute completing the 9 goal fiasco.
Tottenham have now moved to 4th place in the EPL, level on points with North London rivals, Arsenal. This Saturday they travel to Aston Villa, currently in 5th place, in a game that shows all the promise of being a must see. Game will be televised on FSC at 12:30pm EST.
Wigan, currently in 15th place, just above the relegation zone, host high flying new comers Sunderland. Game televised on FSC at 7:00pm EST.
