We are all One with God - even those who are evil?

We are all One with God – even those who are evil?

Recently I published, “The argument for inclusion: God is impartial - can’t we try?” The message within the article was that every one of us is special (or none of us is special) and God is impartial. I took it one step further and suggested that God’s impartiality offered a good case for inclusion. It was published on Friday January 15, Martin Luther King’s birthday. I did not realize it was King’s birthday at the time. It wasn’t planned, though I’m sure it was no accident.

This article sparked interest from an inquisitive reader who sent me a note prodding, “We are all One with God except … are you suggesting that evil people are also One (with God)?” I turned inward and meditated.

Like everyone, I struggle with thoughts like, ‘How could God sanction the death of a child?’ Or, ‘Why didn’t God shield those people impacted by a natural disaster?’ Or surely, ‘those individuals responsible for horrific acts upon humankind – those evil acts – cannot be One with God... Can they?’

As a student of New Thought philosophy, we are taught to recognize and see God in everything and everyone. From the tiniest of creatures to the largest of beasts, from living cells to inorganic matter, from thought to manifested form … there is only God. God is all, the all in all, all good, all abundant, all loving, all peaceful, and all joyful - all the time. God is the essence of all and there is no spot where God is not.

Freewill and white T-shirts versus black T-shirts

Everyone is One with Spirit, connected to God and connected to each of us. We all have freewill however, to make choices about how we live our lives. We can choose what the majority of people perceive as the “right” way or the light-way to live. Or we can choose the opposite or what most perceive as “evil” or darkness. Whichever path we choose however, does not take away from there is no spot where God is not.

Some go so far as categorizing those who seek light as playing on the white t-shirt team, while those living darkness are often associated with being on the black team. Of course, during life both teams meet and there is a rivalry which is commonly referred to as the age-old story of or good versus evil. This theme is repeated throughout life, in books, in news stories, in songs, in movies, like in "Star Wars" where Luke Skywalker takes on Darth Vader’s dark side and in the end the light wins. I personally think we should change the team colors to red and blue, because “black and white” is a bit biasing, don’t you think?

Darkness doesn’t imply there is no light

There is no place that God is not. This means God’s light is everywhere. Of course there are situations in the world and people that are perceived as dark. Rather than choosing to think of them as darkness, which implies void of light, I much prefer to recognize there are varying shades of light.

I believe this goes to the heart of my friend’s question, “Are you suggesting that evil people are also One?” Yes, God is the essence of all and there is no spot where God is not. People are not evil. Though freewill permits that we choose how to live our life and some choose to do evil things.

In my next article, I will continue thoughts on how diet impacts which team we play on (the red or blue t-shirts) … and I’m not talking about meat versus vegetables. Check back to learn what appetite you have.

Namaste

Precisely. It can be taken further though, that even the "dark" (people/energies)are doing "work" for God, because it causes polarization, a calling to God/Creator for help, by those being pressed on by the darkness, and thus you/they are bringing yourself/themselves closer to God/Creator and that is always the desired end result, whether people realize it or not. All paths lead to the One.
    Great insights.
    Thank you.

Amen to we are One even the evil - it is one of the biggest challenges in grasping that the Creator knows what she is doing and also a challenge to love everyone no matter what they do!

    Susan,
Thank you for your thoughts ... and so true. it's easy to love those when they send love ... but when they don't ...the work begins.

these are really tough questions that you are tackling I believe god is everywhere too, I think that those who turn to the dark side have some how gotten disconnected from god and that was of their own choosing

    @Alex,

I was fascinated by your article because I am an atheist who shares exactly the beliefs you stated in this article - except that I believe gods and goddesses are mythology... In other words, I believe that Nature is the highest force in the Universe, that no super-natural (higher-than-Nature) entities exist (ie., no gods, goddesses, angels, demons, heaven, hell, etc.)... Nature is all-inclusive, encompassing all that exists in the Universe... The difference in our beliefs is that as an atheist, I do not believe in a "separate" deity to whom one would pray or ask for intervention in Life... Nature includes all of us (we are a part of Nature), and therefore we would not pray to Nature since that would be praying to ourself...

Anyway, thank you for your thought provoking ideas...

TWJ - thank you for sharing your personal thoughts on this article. So fascinating. Generally "New Thought" faiths teach unity/oneness and that God is not "separate" from us - but One with us. so pleased to have you here and i hope you come back.
    Namaste.

We live through our perceptions and choices. We choose to define all our terms - God, evil, love etc but they are just thoughts in our head. We alone create meaning for ourselves. I see these terms as labels, a convenient way of collating for the purpose of sharing company.
One of the most powerful questions once asked of me was "What made me start to think I was separate from God!"
My thoughts created my reality, so I was acting in a disconnected way without realising (I call that innocent). In the same way evil will exist for me if I choose to believe in it.
I see the powerful emotion of fear lying behind behavioural differences today. If we meet fear with fear, there is no resolution. I see fear as the thought that love itself is inadequate or absent. Love is what fear desires, but we cannot escape thoughts we have created and defined unless we come to see them all as innocent meaningless misunderstandings. True connection happens, no opinions required!
