Pixorial, a new (old) free video editing, saving, sharing site. (Beta invites here!)

Pixorial

DEMOGala at the Colorado convention center was big on the gala, and not so much on the DEMO, but one company stood out with a new product for consumers: Pixorial.

As the headline of this story so clearly states, this is a new (old) video service. Let me explain.

The new part is the company, which just launched.

The "old" part is the video itself, because Pixorial has the ability to digitize and then edit, save and share old movies.

Here's how it works: You send them your old video, Super-8 or whatever, and they will digitize it and store it on their servers and then give you access to a private area on the site that will let you view that video, edit, and share the whole thing or just parts through Facebook, or by email, or however you want to share it. You can combine everything into one big video, including the stuff that's digital now.

There's been some chatter for years that there might be video editing on YouTube someday, but for now Google just tells you to use an off-line tool. There are some other on-line tools for editing, but they only work for all-digital video.

Of course there are local services in most cities that will let you drop off your old videos and turn them into a DVD, but the problem is that you can't then share DVDs over the internet, and they can also be costly.

So Pixorial fills a nice niche.

I met several members of the Pixorial team, and they had that glow that comes from a lot of long days and nights working on something that they were very proud of. They should be, it's a slick product, and seems to really work.

And it's not hard to see how there's a good market for it. Let's say you have a relative having a birthday with some big number divisible by 10 and you want to make a video for the party or as a party favor. If you want to combine some of the video from each decade of the person's life, well, there's not really a way to do that now without hiring an edit bay at a local video production facility. With Pixorial, you can now do it all relatively quickly, only having to wait for the mail to deliver the video to their facility in metro Denver.

Free invites

Much of the service is free, but there is a subscription for some of the services. For instance with a free account you can upload 10 GB of video, but with a paid account it is unlimited.

There are also reasonable fees for digitizing your old media, and for publishing your DVDs.

The paid accounts are $25 a year, but for readers of the New Technology Examiner, your first six months are free. Just enter the code "enjoyyourshow25" into the promotion window. If you try it, leave a comment below to let me know what you think. There are a limited number of these invites, so you might want to sign up now, even if you don't want to do the video for another couple of weeks.

Bottom line: If you want to make a video that includes some non-digital footage, Pixorial is a great new choice.

Full Disclosure. The FTC is now requiring that writers disclose if they got anything of value from the subject of an article. I think the spirit of those rules is great, here it goes: I got two small bags of popcorn from Pixorial at their table during DEMOGala. Lest anyone think this is not of significant value let me just say that I really love popcorn.
