Remember those days in your own room, rocking out to your hairbrush, envisioning your own screaming audience before you. To the left, your Kirk Cameron adorned walls; to the right your gigantic, pink, “portable” telephone. Sporting the side ponytail, some Bubblegum Lipsmackers, and polka dot PJ’s, your enthused audience thinks you’re the hottest thing since moon boots.
Those emerging days, when everything was so exciting, so mystifying, so… horrible. Everything seems new and promising, and with that more potential to hurt you than many things yet to come. It is one of the most vulnerable times of your life. If only at that time, you had more support for your crazed body, mind, and emotions than Madonna and NKOB. Can you imagine having the support of girls your age, openly claiming their tween-age awkwardness and offering their most empathetic understanding and encouragement?
Your little one doesn’t have to endure the same lack of worldly support and understanding. As the fervent mommy you are, you will no doubt be offering all the comfort you possibly can, but sometimes the confusion of a blossoming rose yearns for a more personal understanding within peers, as you surely can recall quite well.
Producer, songwriter, and vocal coach Lessia Bonn, based in Sonoma, California, decided one day to round up all of her tween and teenage vocal students at her previous home in Santa Barbara, forming a peer support group she dubbed “Crew Girls” who recorded an entire album of comforting music for the girl developing into a woman. Although it is the official title of their inspiring CD, Bonn credits the development toward the basic supportive idea and story behind the title:
Crew is more a concept than a definitive group of girls. The CD is kind of our ‘pet rock’, our special offering of who we are and what we stand for.

Although a select few of Crew Girls have continued to record their own music, the concept is what brought them together, and what the bond of the CD is all about.
Crew girls came together with only one thing in common; a love of singing. But when those voices filled the room, magic happened; all these kids singing together, not like a choir, but like a single voice with its own special magic. Somehow that magic translated into a bond that refuses to go away. It’s phenomenal,” explains Bonn.
