Brett Favre's no Brady Quinn...
Eric Mangini officially agreed to a four-year deal with the Cleveland Browns to become their new head coach.
Let me get this straight, because I’m a little confused here.
The Patriots had Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator. He was wildly successful. The Cleveland Browns hired him to become their new head coach.
He was, by all accounts, a failure.
Eric Mangini was the Patriots’ defensive coordinator after Crennel left. He was mediocre, even having his play calling duties stripped towards the end of the season. He then became the head coach of the New York Jets and was fired after overseeing one of the great collapses in NFL history.
And the Cleveland Browns have hired him to replace Crennel.
Gee, I wonder how this is going to work out?
Mangini accepting the job in Cleveland officially rules out Scott Pioli as a candidate to become their GM. Pioli would likely want to hire his own head coach, and even if he didn’t, we can safely assume he won’t accept Mangini as his guy.
That leaves Kansas City as the lone remaining potential destination for Pioli. The guess here is that he stays in New England.
Josh McDaniels, on the other hand, looks like he’ll probably be moving on.
Yesterday we found out he was the leading candidate for the Broncos job. Today, we report that he’ll be interviewing with the Rams on Friday.
Other news around the NFL:
Tedy Bruschi wants to return to the Patriots next season. The team will likely take him back, but probably in a reduced role. He was a shadow of his former self this season, but can still be useful in certain situations.
The Seattle Seahawks have received permission from the Patriots to interview special teams coach Brad Seely. Seely has been on the Patriots’ coaching staff since before Belichick. No word on what position the Seahawks have in mind for Seely.
The Dallas Cowboys released Adam “Pac Man” Jones yesterday after new information was uncovered about a 2007 shooting by ESPN’s Outside the Lines. The report will air this weekend. “Pac Man” is likely done in the NFL.

would have liked to seen Randy Lerner pursue some other coaching options, however I think Mangini is an upgrade from Romeo Crennel. I linked you in my newest column.
Mangini should not have been fired by the Jets (NY fans kill long-term plans more than US stockholders!) and will be good in Cleveland. I am just surprised Pioli didn't follow him there.
