Brett Favre tries to end former Patriots safety Eugene Wilson's season with ugly cheap shot

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre (4) gets up after making an illegal crackback block below the knees against a Houston Texan during the third quarter of a preseason NFL football game Monday, Aug. 31, 2009, in Houston. In case you missed it, Brett Favre did his best to end former New England Patriot (and current Houston Texan) Eugene Wilson’s season last night.

In the third quarter, while lined up as a wide receiver in a “wildcat” style play, Favre threw an illegal crackback block right to the knee of Wilson. Wilson hobbled off the field with an apparent knee injury.

If the NFL is going to suspend every defensive player who looks at a quarterback the wrong way, they need to dish out the same punishment to quarterbacks who, purposely or not, throw dangerous blocks at defenders’ knees.

Favre, who told ESPN that he had cracked ribs prior to the game just in case he played poorly (need that built-in excuse), actually had a pretty good game up until that point. He dink and dunked the Texans to death, which is exactly what the Vikings want from their quarterback. He played efficient, mistake-free football.

But his hit on Eugene Wilson was dirty. Very dirty. At a minimum, he should be fined.

If the NFL wants to be fair, he should be suspended.

Think I’m being too harsh? Judge for yourself (at least until the NFL figures out someone posted the video on YouTube and confiscates it LeBron James style):

I don't think you are being to harsh, Favre put Eugene Wilson's career on the line when he did that and he should be punished.

I definitely think there should be a suspension involved. These injuries end careers all the time. A few years ago, Trent Green tried to throw a similar block and took a knee to the head, effectively ending his career. It's dangerous on both ends, and shows a complete disregard for the safety of other players. Favre could have made that block high, instead he threw himself right at the knees of a player who didn't see him coming.

Inflamatory nonsensical title. The mistake was putting their 39 year old $25 million QB by himself out in the flat where he has probably never been to block much larger defenders. Favre didn't know what he was doing and just turned his back and threw himself at someone.

This is getting out of hand. The Favre-haters are out of their mind.

This writer has clearly written a piece out of hatred and is as biased as one can get. When you lose objectivity like this, you lose the ability to write a decent article. You'd expect this kind of thing from a George-Soros funded left wing website full of exaggerations and lies... now I guess to expect it when reading articles dealing with Favre.

    Sean Crowe is a hack.

If you Eugene Wilson had done that to Brett Favre, on say an INT or a fumble, the league would have already suspended him. And the fact that he "didn't know what he was doing" wont wash.
Nothing will happen, the NFL would never think of disciplining him, since it went out of its way to keep the story of his comeback alive.

Hopefully, Eugene Wilson will be ok.

If Wilson had blocked Favre like that Wilson would have been fined AND suspended one game. I guess you have to be Black to get punished in the NFL. Silly.

Who's the idiot that wrote this article? Favre was obviously unfamiliar with the sheme and threw himself at the proposed target (and looked to be almost as hurt as Wilson was!) It was clearly unitentional. Favre has never been accused of being dirty and most all defensive players respect him for playing the game, which includes blocking....with a linebacker's mentality. A fine wouldn't be off the charts, but it isn't necessary. There's no history. Doofus, write about something else.

Any person that defends Brett Favre after he has crapped on anyone and everyone that has made his career is truly confused... Favre's ego is going to ruin his legacy and any team that he joins. To say that he "didn't know what he was doing" is pathetic. He is a 20 year veteran to the NFL (ie; professional). Get off your soap boxes! Also, let's keep football a little more sacred than mixing in political comments. It doesn't show intellect and no business in sports...

None of us knows what goes on in Favre's mind. We can surmise that - with his enormous time in the league - he certainly knows the rule about "going low." Everything on video is subject to interpretation, and what Favre did may have been more reflex than anything else.

But once he saw the player down on the grass holding his knee, he could have walked over and said something to him. For all his greatness, the man certainly has no clear need to constantly draw attention to himself. But he does. And I, for one, respect him considerably less than I once did.

He tried to end his season? Are you serious? I'm not really a Favre fan, but that is a silly thing to say. How can your words be taken seriously when you say things like that?

Another thing, why do you refer to Eugene Wilson as a former Patriot and secondarily as a current Texan. He plays for the Texans! It's like a 5 year old wrote this.

It's clear from the video that he was aming for a take down at Wilson's waist and his body was in front of Wilson's however his timing was off and he had dropped lower by the time they collided. Favre should get fined for as it is a crackback block but it's clear it was not intentional.

Even the ESPN guys, the same ESPN guys who were Favre-loving to the point where they actually crapped all over one of their own reporters in his defense earlier in the day, called it a cheap shot.

Do I really think he tried to hurt Wilson purposely? No. But that's not the point. Intent doesn't matter. It was a dangerous hit. A dirty hit by NFL standards. If a defensive player did that to a quarterback he'd lose at least one game check.

I referred to Wilson as a former Patriot because I cover the Patriots, not the Texans. Had it not been a former Patriot I wouldn't have reported it here.

As for the George Soros comment...seriously? So if this web site were run by a Republican we'd have no problems with over the hill quarterbacks going low on Houston safeties? Really? Don't you have a town hall meeting to go disrupt?

In between writing articles and being an obvious Patriots homer, when did you find the time to ask Favre if he did indeed try to end Wilson's career?

You say if it wasn't a former Pats player then you wouldn't have written about it. But Favre was never a Patriot yet you write "Brett Favre takes yet another dump on his already soiled legacy". Whats up with that? You obviously hate on Favre. Let me guess, if Wilson (or any player for that matter) took out Favre's knees, your title would have been, "Former Patriots player Eugene Wilson thankfully ends Favre's career with a clean hit". Gimme a break you quack.

Hey Miami Vice. TV references? Is that the best you have? No class... you probably are related to Al Davis. Get out in the day light. Just because Favre is/was a great QB does not make him a good person. His past few years have proven this fact. Change the channel...

    That was absolutely fantastic.

Yes, I am an unabashed Favre hater. I was pretty sure that came across when I questioned his rib injury. And yes, I tend to take any opportunity I can to remind people how much I dislike Brett Favre.

But if it wasn't Eugene Wilson, who was the starting safety for two of the Patriots' Super Bowl victories, then I probably wouldn't have mentioned it here.

All that said, if Brett Favre hadn't tanked that game against the Jets in 2002, or that game against the Dolphins last season, I probably wouldn't mention him here at all....

And yes, I'm a Patriots homer. I never claimed to be otherwise.

Sean, kudos on the deadspin pickup. I just got the email.

That 'Thankfully ends Brett Favre's career" is LOL funny. But seriously, it was a career-ending hit. Quit complaining about the headline, folks, and complain about the cheap shot. "YourMom" makes a good point: being a 20-year veteran, he knows better. Hopefully No.4 goes away once and for all, very very soon.

Another Farve hater I see, lol. I'm certain Brett didn't do it on purpose or mean to hurt the guy. That's really not his style AT ALL. In factm, that's one thing that will get him riled up, when people intentionally try to hurt each other. I've seen him take off after some guy for hammering his receivers illegally. Is Wilson hurt badly? I see it says, he was hurt, but there are NO details whatsoever that I can find. How "hurt" is "hurt"? It felt better 15 min. later?

Well, at least the media got a real good excuse to hammer on Favre, as they like to do so much, and then get people to comment on their articles, thus clicking on their site, by stirring up as much nonsense as possible. What would y'all do without Favre? Recognize your obscurity?

I'm sure Favre will be fined appropriately. It may be the first time he's ever been fined. What IS important is whether Wilson is or will be okay. Would you mind reporting on that relevant news, lol?

By the time I looked, the NFL had put the ki-bosh on the video for "copyright reasons." Which means, "Brett is our cash cow, and we're not letting anyone see something bad that he did." We saw the same thing with Nike and LeBron.

We could always count on Favre to throw blocks, but he always kept them legal with us. His character is just deteriorating more and more after Holmgren stopped being his coach.
