Sharks visit popular family beach destinations on Cape Cod and Cape Ann

This Saturday, June 26, 2010 photo released by Bruce Sweet shows a juvenile great white shark swimming in the Atlantic Ocean about 20 miles off the coast of Gloucester, Mass., in the rich fishing ground known as Stellwagen Bank. It may not be safe to enter the water. At the height of summer vacation season, swimmers in Orleans on Cape Cod are being cautioned due to three separate shark sitings. In what sounds like another sequel to the famous shark movie, Jaws (1975), which was filmed on Martha's Vineyard, Cape Cod, the Coast Guard is warning swimmers not to swim too far off shore due to three recent sitings of sharks, including a Great White Shark.

Officials Say It's Business As Usual

A 15-foot shark was seen eating seals off Nauset Beach in Orleans, Massachusetts. Enhancing the plot to near fictional proportions, the Town of Chatham has not closed the beaches to swimmers and the Chatham Harbormaster instead urges swimmers to 1) not venture too far from shore 2) "pay attention to their surroundings" and 3) don't swim with the seals, according to TheBostonChannel.com.

Boston.com reports, "Officials find no cause for alarm."

“We don’t believe it’s a threat to public safety,’’ Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Ian Bowles told Boston.com.

"Avoid swimming near seals, be aware that sharks may be present, but there's no need to change your plans to go to the beach," spokeswoman Catherine Williams of the state Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs"  CapeCodOnline.com.

Blame it on the Seals

The sharks, like many tourists and visitors, visit the Cape for the fresh seafood. For the sharks, that delicious meal comes in the form of live seals.

More seals are calling Cape Cod home as the water warms. Sharks go where the food is, and right now that's off the Cape.

More Shark Sightings in Massachusetts

Over the weekend, a Great White Shark was spotted off the Gloucester, Massachusetts coast, and last month a shark was caught by a fishing crew in Stellwagen Bank.

Last summer a shark was spotted from a beach in Chatham, Massachusetts according to CNN. According to CNN, only two of the four shark attacks that have been reported since the year 1670 Massachusetts were fatal. That still may be two too many for some swimmers.
