10 First Day of Fall 2009 Activities for outdoor family recreation

Hiking and Photo Taking

Geocaching

Scarecrow Making

Nature Collecting - Collect acorns, leaves, chestnuts and any other items you find with kids on your nature walks. Bring along paper bags for collecting. This type of activity will help keep young children aware of the world around them. It's also a way to encourage them to take hikes with you.

Homemade Leaf Maze Making - Amaze your kids with your own leaf maze in your backyard. Let kids form a trail, using the rake to make a maze. Invite them to decorate the maze with pumpkins, gourds and scarecrows.

Apple Picking

Backyard Treasure Hunting (Toddlers - Preschool) - While they are preoccupied at school or with another relative, make a backyard treasure hunt for kids. Hide plastic trinkets, real or pretend pumpkins and gourds, and invite them to go on a fall treasure  hunt. They will be running, not walking, to find the Autumnal treasures. Use summer beach pails with handles  or apple baskets to gather the treasure.

Mass Audubon Questing (Preschool and older)

Pumpkin Olympics! - Set up Olympic-style games with pumpkins. Have a pumpkin-rolling contest, a pumpkin jumping contest and an obstacle course made with hay bales and pumpkins. Give out stickers or stamps commemorating the first day of fall. Or make a leaf necklace with a foam leaf spray-painted gold to look like a gold medal.

Fairy and Elf House Searching - Engage the imaginations of preschoolers and young elementary school children by seeking out fairy and elf homes in tree holes and underneath fallen stumps. Have children collect acorns, feathers and other items related to the first day of fall, that they can leave for the fairies and elves living in the trees in their yards or at their favorite parks.
