Angelology 107-Who are the Seraphim?

Welcome to the seventh article of this series.  Perhaps you have already read the first six.  If not, you should probably read them, in order. On the scale of Maimonides, the Seraphim are the sixth "lowest",  or, perhaps it   would be better to say fifth-ranked, Choir of Angels.  The word "Seraphim"  probably means "fiery Ones" or "Fiery Serpents".   They appear to be closely linked to the Cherubim.  Classically, the Seraphim  are depicted in crimson garments, while the Cherubim wear azure.  They are described, by Isaiah,  as having six wings, one set covering their faces, one set covering their feet, and the middle set of wings actually used to fly.  You may remember that the Cherubim have four wings.  There is a quote from this passage used in Jewish and Christian prayers:

"Holy, holy, holy is the LORD Almighty;
       the whole earth is full of his glory."

In the Kabbalah, the Seraphim correspond to  the Sephirah Geburah, which means "Power" or "Strength".  It is associated with the Planet Mars.   Their Archangel is named "Khamael" , which means, "God's Seeker".  It is said that Khamael  and the Seraphim  can find that which is lost, whether people, valuable objects, or even Faith.  The association of the Seraphim with Fire is very close.  These Celestial Beings are known for their extreme passion and ardor.

The next article in this series will deal with the Hashmalim.

    Ah. So is it they who help to find lost people and objects? Like when a psychic helps to find someone... are the Seraphim guiding them?

    That would make sense to me, Lydia!

    I can see now how different psychic abilities are influenced by different angels. Some psychics seem to be messengers of good news as well as warnings; while others, as Lydia said, are helping the law enforcement agencies find the lost people. Excellent point, Lydia!
