Haunted schools: Edith A Lombard Elementary School Springfield, Maine

Residents of the tiny community of Springfield, Maine claim that Edith Lombard may have left this world, but that her spirit walks in the halls of her namesake. The former Edith Lombard School Elementary School served the local area for nearly half a decade before closing due to declining school enrollment and budgetary issues.

Last year, it reopened to house the newly formed 4-year-old program. It appears Edith waited for the return.

Reports range from papers going missing and reappearing in a new location to doors opening and closing, toilets flushing and objects moving on their own. Nearly every teacher has experienced unexplained events at one time or another, but the ghost who they affectionately refer to as “Edith” doesn’t appear to bother them.

Some outsiders disagree. Take the delivery driver who entered the building to deliver a package, for example. Upon feeling a humanly tap on his shoulder, he turned to meet the employee only to be greeted with thin air. Reports indicate that he was so shaken up that he vowed not to return.

Amy Sawtelle, former resident and nearby neighbor to the school, might disagree about the source of the haunting. She reportedly observed another former teacher enter the school and never leave. Mrs. Kelly had been out for several months on “sick leave,” but suddenly appeared in the driveway of the school.

Sawtelle watched her walk into the building, thinking that someone had dropped her off and that she had returned to her prepare her classroom. Unknown to Sawtelle at the time, that teacher passed away shortly before the sighting, leaving Sawtelle to wonder exactly who she had seen walk into the building that lonely afternoon and why she never saw her leave.

Whoever haunts the building, one thing is for certain: the spirit is friendly – if a bit mischievous at times – and seems to be determined to remain. Staff at the new 4-year-old program attest that her presence is still felt and that objects continue to seemingly move on their own.
