T-Wolves to name Kurt Rambis as Head Coach

 NBA

The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired former Lakers assistant Kurt Rambis as their new Head Coach. Rambis' deal is worth $8 million dollars over four seasons.

Rambis was one of three finalists for the T-Wolves coaching vacancy with ABC's Mark Jackson and Houston Rockets assistant Elston Turner.

Wolves owner Glen Taylor told the Pioneer Press, "Kurt, with his experience playing and coaching for a winning organization and working under people like Pat Riley, will bring a lot to our organization. In meeting with him and talking to him, I know he's very excited about having an opportunity to help build his own team."

The Sacramento Kings came close to hiring Rambis but could not agree on the length and dollar amount of the contract. The Kings subsequently hired former Suns coach Paul Westphal.

The Timberwolves released Head Coach Kevin McHale after 16 seasons with the organization paving the way for Rambis to achieve his dream.

Rambis has limited head coaching experience having coached the Los Angeles Lakers in 1999. Rambis led the team to a 24-13 record and a first round series win over the Houston Rockets.

Mark Jackson can't catch a break.
I don't know why all these other coaches keep getting recycled. This guy needs an opportunity.

Maybe his lack of experience is preventing him from getting a head coaching job? Scottie Pippen also wants to walk right into being a head coach, but it typically doesn't happen that way. I believe Vinny Del Negro and Doc Rivers are the only recent guys with no assistant coaching experience to become head coaches.
