Houston has the largest uninsured population so 3700 volunteers and 2,000 patients gathered at Reliant Center for a free health clinic.
Steve Cantrell's Story
Steve Cantrell had a small blister on his lower lip that turned into a fast-growing tumor that covered his whole lower lip. He can't brush his teeth or get a job. When they saw him in line, he was brought immediately to an exam room. The cancer has spread to both sides of his neck. He will have surgery immediately. Cancer Treatment Centers of America is providing free follow-up and treatment.
Ziggy Jones Story
Ziggy decided to work at the clinic instead of stand in line for her health. Diagnosed with breast cancer and her son was also receiving chemotherapy. Still had the chemo. tube in her arm two years later and is not insurable now. A plastic surgeon offered her free breast reconstruction.
Dr. Oz tv show recap: Caffeine Detox Challenge
Caffeine is the most abused substance in America. If you regularly use more than 350 mg a day you may physically dependent. Withdrawal includes:
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Anxiety
- Irritability
- Difficulty concentrating
A moderate dose of caffeine is 200-300 mg a day. A cup of coffee has 100-200 mg, a cup of tea has 40-120 mg and soda has 20-80 mg.
Caffeine Detox
1) First week: wean off caffeine
- Limit caffeine intake to 200mg a day (2 cups coffee)
- First day: delay first caffeinated beverage until you start getting a headache
- Then: delay first caffeinated beverage by an hour each day first week
- Use ibuprofen and water to relieve headaches
2) Second week: boost energy with:
- Drink unlimited iced green tea. It has a quarter of the amount of caffeine found in coffee
- Try B vitamins or foods with B vitamins like chickpeas, spinach, and whole grain cereal
3) Third week: relieve side-effects
- Hot beverage: Rooibos tea, caffeine-free and relieves nervous tension associated with caffeine withdrawal
- Cold beverage: Smoothie with psyllium, cleanses and keeps regularity
4) Fourth week: beware of hidden caffeine
- Decaf: 97 percent of caffeine is removed
- Not all manufacturers are required to disclose caffeine content
- Avoid products with the word energy. Energy = caffeine
- Watch out for hidden caffeine in ice cream, chocolate, and sports drinks
Dr. Oz tv show recap: voice as indicator of health
Most people don't know acid reflux symptoms don't show until it affects vocal cords. If hoarse once per week, see a doctor. Acid reflux can end with cancer of the vocal cords if untreated.
