Dr. Oz tv show recap: drug store mistakes: mixing medicines
Combing prescriptions and OTC can spell disaster. 2 million per year experience adverse drug reactions resulting in 11 deaths per hour in America. 700 OTC used to require prescriptions.
4 deadly combinations, OTC:
- Pain reducers and prescription blood thinners: anti-inflammatory pain medications, such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, reduce pain but reduce: a) stomach lining and b) blood platelets which can cause massive gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Migraine treatments and prescription diet pills: diet pills containing phenylpropanolamine increase risk of bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). The symptom is severe headache. If you mistake that headache as a migraine and combine the diet pill with OTC migraine medicine, that risk is increased further. Also, both raise blood pressure. Taken together, they can cause hypertension and stroke.
- Calcium supplements and prescription thyroid medication: calcium supplements and antacids interfere with absorption of prescription thyroid hormone. Take 4 hours apart.
- Decongestants and prescription diabetes drugs: decongestants have added sugar and raise blood pressure. The combo can cause hypertension, high blood sugar and increase risk for stroke and poor glucose control.
Always talk to pharmacist or doctor before mixing these combinations or if experiencing new symptoms after taking prescriptions. Check government drug information

Excellent!
happy Thanksgiving Deborah!
Good tips. My husband always tells me to look at the water when I get sea sickness. It helps.
Wow, I never knew about all those odd drug interactions! Thanks!
I tweeted this! I think people should be aware so that a drug store mistake does not put them in harms way!
