Virus and bacteria invade through: eyes, mouth, nose and even cracks in skin. In 2002, a flight passenger infected 22 others with SARS and five died. Dr. Tierno, infections disease, shared tips to stay healthy while traveling.

Flight Kit:

  1. Alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Use after seated, before and after eating and drinking, and after returning from rest room. Reduces chances of getting sick by 50%.
  2. Sanitizing wipes: Clean tray (found MRSA on them) and handrails.
  3. Airplane bathrooms: Wash hands, use paper towel to open door and use hand sanitizer when seated again.
  4. North American ginseng: seems to ward off flu. Take before flight.
  5. Direct airflow to chest: best ventilation protection from airborne germs

How to stay safe in motels: luxury or budget

#1 problem preparing family meals: cuts. Dr. Oz's mother assisted him. She just flew in from Turkey. If get a cut:

  1. Wash with water immediately

  5. Military gauzes contain collagen to stop bleeding. Add to first aid kit.
  6. Go to ER if: can’t move finger in both directions, hit a nerve or tendon, see edges- need stitches.

3 fitness products tested by Consumer Reports

  1. Ab Rocket, $100: might work for beginners, not as effective as sit-ups.
  2. Tony Little Rock ’n Roll Stepper, $80: burned same number of calories as flat treadmill at 3.5 mph in the same time but less effective on glutes.
  3. Perfect Pushup, $40: good upper-body work-out, adds variety

I never use 2 things in a hotel room- the provided ceramic/glass cups, and the top cover of the bed. Both of those items are filthy!

How come no one does the story about the new sanitizers on the market which are alcohol-free? There are new products that kill 3 times the germs, work up to 30 minutes, and they are safer to use than alcohol. This one is my favorite: www.cleanphirst.com/store/alcohol_free_foam_hand_sanitizer.asp

I'm always so worried I'll pick something up when traveling. People often don't wash their hands or cover their mouths when flying. Thank goodness for hand sanitizer.
