Natural health, homemade and herbal remedies are quite popular now – it seems that many people want to use more natural products on their bodies and in their homes to avoid environmental toxins. However, it is important to remember that just because something is natural does not necessarily mean that it is safe to be used freely in unlimited amounts. In fact, some of the deadliest poisons are natural. How about some botox to go with that arsenic facial?
In any event, it is very important to be aware of the effect of natural remedies, especially when taking prescription medication. Grapefruit juice is one of the foods to avoid when taking some prescription medications for erectile dysfunction, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Please note that grapefruit juice does not effect ALL medications prescribed for the listed conditions – check with your healthcare provider to be sure.
According to Medical News Today, there are a few more concerns with natural remedies. These remedies, which include but are not limited to St. John’s Wort, gingko biloba and garlic may either reduce or increase the potency of the prescription heart disease drugs a person is taking resulting in arrhythmia, higher blood pressure or increased cholesterol levels.
This is not to say that natural remedies are dangerous or should not be used, however, if you are taking prescription medication, always check with your health care professional to ensure there will be no interactions or adverse effect if you are also using natural and/or herbal remedies.
