Statistics show H1N1 Swine Flu symptoms peaked in many areas, but still strong

H1N1 Symptoms Still Widespread,
Though Peaked in Many Areas

The World Health Organization (WHO) released updated statistics on reported cases of pandemic 2009 H1N1 (swine flu) globally on November 27th, current through November 22nd.  Although these statistics do show that the spread of the virus and the numbers of cases of H1N1 symptoms may have peaked in many areas, the virus is by no means gone, and remains strong worldwide.

H1N1 Symptoms Still Spread Across the Globe

As of November 22nd, virtually every area of the globe has active influenza transmission and cases of H1N1 symptoms, including 207 countries and territories.  Many countries have quit counting individual cases, or testing of milder influenza-like illness (ILI) so a current case count is impossible; however, it is well over 600,000 cases, with over 7,800 deaths.

Areas where Swine Flu Symptoms May Have Peaked

Most of North America, the Caribbean, and parts of Europe, including Belgium, Bulgaria, Belarus, Ireland, Luxemburg, Norway, Serbia, Ukraine and Iceland, H1N1 spread seems to have peaked, but that in no way means that it is no longer dangerous, it simply means that the numbers of new cases are holding steady or decreasing slightly, rather than continuing to rise.

H1N1 Symptoms Continue to Increase in Some Areas

Parts of Europe and most of Asia continue to see a rise in the number of cases of swine flu symptoms.  In Europe, particularly high influenza activity was seen in Sweden, Norway, Moldova and Italy; over 99% of the subtyped influenza viruses were pandemic 2009 H1N1.

Symptoms of H1N1 on the Decline in Some Places

Many of the tropical areas, including in the Americas and southern Asia, as well as all of Central and South America except for Ecuador and Venezuela, show varying levels of decrease in H1N1 symptom activity.
