Have Moms Concerned for Childrens Health

A survey released November 17th conducted by Opinion Research Corporation showed an increasing worry in mothers over the health and wellness of their children this cold a flu season – in no small part because of the risk of H1N1 symptoms – and are increasingly turning to natural remedies and prevention measures.

Moms Worried About Children's Health

Results of the survey showed that three fourths of the mothers surveyed are extremely, very, or somewhat concerned about their children's health this cold and flu season, with the increased threat from swine flu symptoms added to normal winter health concerns.

It also showed that nearly half, some 40 percent or more, were more involved in their children's health than in the past.  This includes a wide range of methods, most centering around natural prevention and treatment, as worries have also increased about the safety of over the counter (OTC) medications — well over half of those questioned have some sort of concern about OTC medications.  Some of the most common reasons stated:

  • Worry over illness or germs (75%)
  • More informed about health issues due to access to the Internet and other media (59%)
  • Greater interest in natural remedies (35%)
  • Difficulties reaching their doctors (21%)

What Mothers are Doing to Improve Their Children's Health

Over three-fourths of the mothers surveyed indicated that they have been helping their children's health and well being by:

  • Sticking to a healthy diet
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Getting more rest
  • Taking vitamins and/or nutritional supplements

And nearly half said they are using natural remedies or other alternative medicine with their children; this is double the number in a similar survey in March where only 23 percent were using them.
