New Mutation Shows No Evidence of Producing New H1N1 Symptoms
The World Health Organization (WHO) announced November 20th that the Norwegian Institute of Health reported three cases of a mutated H1N1 virus, two associated with the first two deaths from swine flu symptoms in the country, and one with severe H1N1 symptoms.
How Common is the Mutation?
After identifying the three mutated viruses, Norwegian researchers analyzed more than 70 other patients with clinical illness, and found no further instances of the mutated virus; it appears it was isolated to those three cases.
How Dangerous is the Mutation?
Although two of the three cases in Norway were associated with the first two deaths in the country, other similar mutations have been seen sporadically in several other countries, including Brazil, China, Japan, Mexico, Ukraine, and the US.
Because the mutation is so sporadic, a complete profile is not really possible. Although several were found in patients who died, some were also found in mild cases. Likewise, numerous deaths have been from unmutated viruses. No links have been determined between the few cases of mutated viruses, nor does it appear to have spread beyond an individual to date. Thus, the risk is still considered fairly low.
Monitoring for mutations in the 2009 H1N1 swine flu virus or changes in H1N1 swine flu symptoms remains constant by the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance Network and others.
