Symptoms of Swine Flu Confirmed in Dogs
H1N1 swine flu symptoms have been found previously in pet pigs, ferrets, birds and cats — and now it has been confirmed in two dogs as well, by the China Agricultural University at the end of November.
Test Confirms H1N1 Virus in Two Dogs in China
The university tested samples from 52 sick dogs; two of them tested positive for H1N1, which matched the virus found in humans 99%, which means most likely the dogs caught the virus from their human companions. These are the first confirmed cases of H1N1 in dogs, and none to date have been reported in the US, but it means that it is possible.
Protect Your Pets from H1N1 Symptoms
Most common household pets are now confirmed to be in danger of coming down with the symptoms of H1N1. It is therefore important to be as careful with your pets as you would other members of your family. This includes avoiding coughing or sneezing on your pets, or allowing them to come into contact with used tissues or similar items.
H1N1 swine flu symptoms in pets may include:
- lethargy
- loss of appetite
- upper respiratory symptoms like trouble breathing, coughing, sneezing or wheezing
Should your pet develop these sorts of symptoms, it may be advisable to have them tested by your vet for the source of symptoms. Health officials have recommended that because there is no H1N1 vaccine for pets, pet owners may want to more strongly consider getting them.
