Essential oils are taken from plants and herbs and used in various ways. The essential oils of some plants offer health benefits in more than one way for several different ailments. Aromatherapy does bring measurable relief to many people. Often, the aroma of certain foods can remind people of happy events during childhood, elevating the mood or causing one to feel relaxed and secure.
Basil essential oil is made from the flowering tops and the leaves of the plant. The scent is light and sweet, with a somewhat spicy undertone. Basil oils are used in the treatment of many ailments and are often used in aromatherapy. The oil has the ability to clear the mind and aid in concentrating. This essential oil is also used to treat minor cases of occasional depression.
Anise essential oil is taken from the Pimpinella Anisum plant. It is often found in perfumes, cough syrups, and toothpaste. The oil helps clear the mind of worrisome thoughts and makes the body feel warm and relaxed, especially when rubbed into sore muscles
Bay essential oil is distilled from the leaves and berries of the Bay plant. This oil relaxes the body and the mind with its very strong, pungent aroma. Bay leaves are used when cooking many Cajun recipes. For this reason, the smell of Bay essential oils reminds people of good food and happy times spent with friends and relatives. It is also an anti-inflammatory, making it a good treatment for arthritis.
Lavender essential oils are taken from the fragrant flowers and leaves of the lavender plant. This oil is a favorite of many in aromatherapy. It has the ability to calm the nerves and help the body get restful sleep. Some people say that lavender oil sends pleasant dreams.
Aromatherapy works well because the human brain processes information associated with specific smells, allowing or enabling us to recall strong emotions from the past, of times that were relaxing, jubilant, peaceful, or stress-free. Just as a change in scenery can affect the mood, the recall of certain memories can help the mind and body refresh. Aromatherapy works quite well for millions of people. Try walking past a booth where funnel cakes are made and not thinking about a time that aroma put a smile on your face.
