Formerly a beloved fixture at Vinyl Hair Studio here in Columbus, songstress, visual artist and hair stylist Dairdre Scriven has now set up shop at Rendezvous Hair Salon. Originally named Lotus Hair Salon, Rendezvous is located on the OSU campus, and offers a plethora of styling and maintenance options for all phases of hair.
As the highly recommended personal stylist of the Columbus Women’s Issue Examiner Ife Blout, Dairdre works with both natural and chemically treated tresses. Working Tuesday through Saturday to provide her clients with modish cuts, breathtaking styles and vibrant color treatments, Dairdre views her work at Rendezvous as an extension of her artistic nature.
“Hair is one of my ART mediums, I get to sculpt and paint everyday [sic] I come into work,” states Scriven via Rendezvous’ Website.
Dairdre possesses a talent for bringing out the best style, cut or color for her clients based on the client’s own wishes. With most hair technicians one is saddled with accepting what the stylist creates for them based on their (the stylist’s) experience and ideas. But Dairdre works to incorporate her skill with her client’s desires in order to fashion the spectacular.
“I try to have a one-on-one consultation with each of my clients, asking what they would like for me to do and combine it with what I see in their personality,” stated Scriven in our conversation in the fall of 2010. “I want to work with them to create the best style, but I also want to bring out the fullness of who they are in the style I give them.”
For the most part, Dairdre admits, the formula works well. Whether it’s a drastic color change, spirals instead of bone straightness or a funky BAA for a corporate exec who would have otherwise opted for something a little tamer, Ms Scriven’s vision most definitely work wonders.
“Sometimes I’ll suggest a style for a client that they aren’t ready for at the time. Something cutting edge or dramatic,” confides Dairdre. “At first the client will decline because they aren’t ready, but when they come back and feel that they are, the results end up being just what they’d hoped for.”
Although Scriven specializes in natural textured hair, she is a fully licensed cosmetologist with experience in styling all hair types. In addition to female clients she also styles men’s hair, and as an extra bonus Dairdre is fully fluent in sign language so members of the hearing impaired community can also benefit from services.
“One of the many things I love about Dairdre is that she cares about her clients as a whole, not just their hair,” Ife Blount states at Beautyofmyland[dot]com, the Blog she uses to chronicle her experiences with Dairdre. “As an artist as well, [she] is good with helping me visualize alternatives that I may not have considered.”
As for Rendezvous as a whole, the salon offers the usual services such as cuts and coloring, but various member of their eleven person, full service team specialize in keratin treatments, dreadlocks and thermo reconditioning using the YUKO method, also known as Japanese straightening. The salon carries a full line of Kenra Classic, Kenra Platinum and Davines hair care products, as well as Special Effects fantasy colors.
To set up a personal consultation with Dairdre you can contact her directly at (614) 517-7919 or via Rendenzvous at (614) 516-6393. Rendezvous is located at 1644 N. High Street. Although the address says High Street, the entrance to the salon is on Chittenden Ave. where parking is available. Clients may also park at the South Campus Gateway Parking Garage on the corner of 11th Ave & N. High St.
