"Climategate" is much ado about nothing

While climate change skeptics claim some e-mails stolen from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia in England and leaked onto the Internet show that climate data is being manipulated to exaggerate global warming, both the context of the e-mails and overwhelming evidence of rising temperatures show otherwise.

Russian computer hackers are suspected in the theft of 1,073 e-mails, which first publicly appeared on November 17.  The CRU is a leading research body on climate change, contributing to the Fourth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 2007, the most authoritative study of global warming.

The e-mail most commonly cited by global warming skeptics, who have been largely bankrolled by oil and coal interests and have dubbed this matter "climategate," was one written by CRU head Phil Jones, who said, "I've just completed 'Mike's Nature trick' of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years ... to hide the decline."

Claiming that Jones' statement demonstrates data manipulation is to take it completely out of context.  The "trick" referred to in the e-mail is the matter of reconciling actual temperature recordings with tree ring growth, which is used to reconstruct temperatures from earlier periods.  Wood density declined after 1960, making tree ring records after this time inaccurate, and that is the "decline" referred to in the e-mail, not a decline in temperatures.

Putting aside the e-mails, which were private conversations, the evidence of global warming is overwhelming, for the 10 hottest years have all occurred since 1997, glaciers are retreating and sea levels are rising, and the CRU's findings are consistent with global temperature data from other research groups around the world, including the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the U.S.

Global warming is primarily caused by the burning of such fossil fuels as coal, oil and natural gas, which release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.  Carbon dioxide emissions are growing so fast that if nothing is done, average global temperatures will rise by 6 degrees Celsius by the end of this century, which would be disastrous for humanity.  A 40 percent cut in 1990 carbon levels is need to prevent this from happening.

The e-mails were stolen in an attempt to discredit the IPCC and put a damper on the United Nations Climate Change Conference, currently underway in Copenhagen, Denmark, but are likely to have little effect.  This theft, and its response from climate change skeptics, only demonstrates the dysfunctional denial and short-sighted greed of the oil and coal companies, which make huge profits from products that are causing global warming and have no desire to change the way they do business.

Read Lawson's book, wake up and stop doing your little bit to perpetrate this nonsense. What are your sources for your “Facts“? The discredited CRU? The fact is that global temperatures have trended down since January 1998. That’s when global warming stopped, as discussed in Kevin Trenberth’s Oct 12 2009 email “The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't.”

None of their computer models had predicted this.

Science is a labor in search of truth thru proof. Paraphrasing Einstein “it doesn’t matter how may scientists prove me right, rather it only takes one to prove me wrong”

This is where science and the CRU part ways and it is very easy to prove.

The CRU temperature dataset uses surface based temperature thermometers which are easier to manipulate as well as being subject to area “noise” influenced by their specific placement. But there is another dataset which is not influenced by manipulation and interferences and that is the satellite record, which, at great cost, began in December of 1978,

Unfortunately, the CRU has removed their global temperature dataset, (I wonder why),
So to compare, we are left with their “sister” dataset at NASA, ala James Hansen.

If you were to graph these two datasets from January 1998, you would find that the NASA surface based dataset shows temperatures trending UP while the Satellite dataset shows a DOWNTREND. In fact the difference projects out to be 1/3 C deg difference per decade. Doesn’t seem like much but over a 100 year period it would show a difference of over 3 deg C. These are the facts and anyone with a graph program can check for themselves.

By definition it is a scientist duty to be skeptical. Unfortunately, after reading 100’s of these emails, it’s apparent to me that these “so called” scientists objective was to keep the truth from getting out as well as discrediting the truth seekers. The result of the leak has now changed the "believers into deniers" of which you seem to be one.

The UN wants money (to the tune of around $350 billion per year at a 2-3% global carbon tax) to be funneled to those countries.

A few things left unanswered: CO2 levels were much higher long ago than they are now and levels have risen and fallen since then, even long before the advent of the industrial age. Has any scientist found one of those SUV's that dinosaurs drove? Have they found any of the dinosaurs coal-fired power plants?

Have scientists made contact with the aliens on Jupiter, Mars, Pluto and elsewhere that are causing temps to rise on those planets? Those planets (according to NASA ) are and have been warming. Mars ha a melting ice cap. Hmmm. Must be from coal-fired power plants on Mars.

We all want a cleaner environment. Just don't use the con game of AGW to accomplish it.

    1) the evidence of global warming is overwhelming

Yes, that is the consensus -- between both the AGW proponents AND most of the scientists who are skeptical of the AGW hypothesis. Non-issue.

    2) the 10 hottest years have all occurred since 1997

1 of 3 decades monitored thus far by satellites since 1979. 1998, the hottest year (in thirty years only) was caused by EL Nino, and NOT AGW.

    3) glaciers are retreating…

As they have been since the Little Ice Age. But not in the Himalayas, and not on the whole.

    4) and sea levels are rising

4mm/yr, same as before, since the LIA, and right on target

    5) and the CRU's findings are consistent with NASA and NOAA

Nothing is as it seems. Like CRU, there are serious problems with ALL ground temp data records, including the NOAA's and NASA’s. And, like CRU, all the raw data is now "value added", "quality controlled", and ultimately "homogenized" beyond all recognition". See wattsupwiththat for details.

We are missing the point. We have common temperature readings and tree ring data from 1856 2000. If we use regression analysis to predict the relationship between the two using this period there is no statistically significant relationship and we cannot interpolate prior temperatures back to 1000 AD using tree rings, or, how do we really know it was not warmer in prior centuries?

The really interest part is that the Phil Jones and Michael Mann used the 'Trick' of 'Hiding the Decline' by using tree ring data from 1856 to 1960 and adding (incredible but true) made up tree ring data from 1960 to 1980. This made the relationship statistically significant, but scientifically unethical and the CRU and Penn State know this.

After this was exposed they tried a new approach, they pressure tree ring expert Keith Briffa to produce new data. He did this by selecting the one tree ring out of a sample of thirty-four that fit the relationship, again, scientifically unethical.

In 2007 the APS Council adopted a Statement on global warming (also reproduced at the tinyurl site mentioned above) that was based largely on the scientific work that is now revealed to have been corrupted. (The principals in this escapade have not denied what they did, but have sought to dismiss it by saying that it is normal practice among scientists. You know and we know that that is simply untrue. Physicists are not expected to cheat.)
We have asked the APS management to put the 2007 Statement on ice until the extent to which it is tainted can be determined, but that has not been done. We have also asked that the membership be consulted on this point, but that too has not been done. None of us would use corrupted science in our own work, nor would we sign off on a thesis by a student who did so. This is not only a matter of science, it is a matter of integrity, and the integrity of the APS is now at stake.
