Memorial Day is the unofficial kick-off to summer, bringing visions of lazy days, cookouts, weekend getaways and of course, summer vacation.
U.S. national parks offer such a wide range of weekend or extended vacation destinations that there is, literally, something for everyone. Camping at Duck Harbor in Acadia National Park, Maine, or hiking to Hen Wallow Falls in the Great Smoky Mountains, Red Bus Tours and spa treatments at Glacier National Park, Yellow Bus Tours in Yellowstone and cruises to Alaska's national parks are just a few of the thousands of choices available to visitors.
Planning a trip to a national park or a road trip with park stops along the way starts with checking out the individual park websites. Here are resources that help vacationers understand what each park offers, including lodging, camping, what to do and where to go.
Now, national park summer vacation planning just got a whole lot easier. The National Park Service has just launched a new section of the NPS website, called National Parks: The Place to Be for Family Fun – 2009. The centerpiece of the site is a listing by state of what's going on in many of the 391 units of the national park system. In addition, there are travel tips and information on the commercial services and activities available inside each park.
With the whole summer ahead and so many beautiful and memorable national parks to visit across the country, it's going to be exciting to choose where to go and what to see first. Just remember national parks are the place to be for family fun this summer.
