Hornaday dismisses Crafton too soon: Three teams look strong early on in Texas

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series qualifying was held Thursday evening with Matt Crafton taking the pole. Early favorites Todd Bodine and Ron Hornaday Jr. qualified second and fourth respectively. There was some surprises in the form of McCumbee’s third place effort and David Gilliland in fifth.

Raybestos Rookie of the Year points leader Johnny Sauter qualified sixth, putting him in a good position to follow up his intermediate track win at Las Vegas in September. Last weekend’s runner up, Aric Almirola came in seventh.

Rick Crawford, Ricky Carmichael, and James Buescher rounded out the top ten qualifiers.

Three teams set to dominate early on

ThorSport Racing team members had an impressive qualifying session, including taking the pole award. David Gilliland is driving the No. 98 Menards Chevrolet as a third entry for the team this week and had a solid top-five qualifying endeavor. Sauter in the No. 13 qualified just behind Gilliland.

Kevin Harvick Inc. drivers Ron Hornaday and Ricky Carmichael will start will start from the top ten as will Circle Bar Racing drivers Rick Crawford and James Buescher.

Other qualifiers of note

Kyle Busch qualified in 12th place followed by Mike Skinner in the No. 5 Exide Toyota. Brian Scott qualified 15th with David Starr next in line. Colin Braun came in 19th. With Timothy Peters and Terry Cook in 24th and 25th. Tayler Malsam’s speed was a full 5 mph off of the polesitter’s speed of 179.3, which put him in the 29th place slot to start.
