The NASCAR Nationwide Series may not be making a stop at the Milwaukee Mile in 2010, but that doesn't mean the series won't be racing in Wisconsin. NASCAR announced on Monday that the Milwaukee date on the 2010 Nationwide Series schedule has been awarded to Road America, the historic road course in Elkhart Lake, Wis.
“We’re excited to be staying in Wisconsin and racing in front of the passionate fans there at a historic venue that’s new to our NASCAR Nationwide Series,” NASCAR Vice President of Operations Steve O’Donnell said.
The 4.048-mile, 14-turn track will host the Nationwide Series on June 19, continuing a 17-year streak of the Dairy State hosting a NASCAR national series.
Road America has only hosted one previous NASCAR national series race, that being a race Tim Flock won in 1956.
With the addition of Road America to the Nationwide schedule, the series will return to a schedule that includes three road courses. The series only ran at two road courses in 2009 -- Watkins Glen and Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. The Nationwide Series visited three road course per year in 2007 and 2008, racing at Montreal, The Glen, and Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City.
Because it's a new track on the Nationwide Series schedule, competitors will be allowed a full day of extra practice on the Thursday just prior to the race.
“Road America is a very unique track that will provide great racing and will test driver skill and ability on what is a very large course,” NASCAR Nationwide Series Director Joe Balash said.
