One of the best stories of the 2009 season was the rise of Brian Vickers and his #83 Red Bull Racing team. They came out with the goal to win races, and they won one. On top of that they made the chase; however since they fell way short of running well in said chase there is still some work to be done. With that being said the #83 team looks to build upon their successful ’09 campaign and really turn some heads in 2010.
Vickers strong year begins with the fact that he won six poles, and no matte what the rules are for the Budweiser shootout he will be in based on the fact that he made the chase. Brian finished 96.6 of all the laps run in 2009. 79.6% of those were run on the lead lap and his average running position was 16.8. He ran 46.2% of the 2009 laps in the top 15, and had a final drivers rating of 82.3.
To go along with his one win he had four top 5, and 13 top 10 finishes. He had four DNF’s, with three of them coming due to wrecks and one too equipment failure. As Team Red Bull grows it seems likely that Vickers and the#83 team will continue to do better in the Sprint Cup series. Look for him to compete for multiple wins in 2010, and have a far better showing in the chase.
Vickers also ran 17 races in the Nationwide Series, driving the #2 car for Braun Racing. There he racked up a pole, seven top 5, and twelve top 10 finishes. He completed 97.8% of the laps run in the races he entered and had two DNF’s. In this series he won 538 thousand dollars added to his 4.6 million won on the cup side. Not a bad way to make a few million back is it?
We don’t know Vickers Nationwide series plans for 2010, but I am sure he will be around for a few of the races, as he looks towards a strong showing in the Cup season, and more importantly in the chase.
