Jeremy Mayfield will hire high-profile attorney Mark Geragos to represent him in the fight against his suspension by NASCAR. Mayfield was suspended by NASCAR on may 1st, when he failed a random drug test by allegedly testing positive for methamphetamine.
Mayfield won an injuction on July 1st that allowed him to return to the track, but financial problems prevented Mayfield from fielding his own team and no other team was willing to risk the possible backlash from NASCAR by hiring Mayfield as a driver.
An appeals court judge lifted the injuction on July 24th, after NASCAR officials said Mayfield failed a subsequent test. A hearing has been scheduled for early December on the injuction appeal.
Geragos has defended celebrity clients and represented defendants in several high profile cases. Among them are Michael Jackson in his molestation trial, Scott Peterson who was sentenced to death for the murder of his wife, Lacy Peterson, and most recently Chris Brown, who was on trial for the beating of his girlfriend, pop star Rhianna.
