The three books of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy – The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2008), The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest (2009) – have already provided the basis for three motion pictures in Larsson’s native Sweden with a U.S. film version to appear in December 2011. A press release from DC Entertainment issued Oct. 11, 2011 indicates that these works will be soon be adapted for another format as well, that of the graphic novel.
Under its Vertigo imprint, DC Entertainment will publish each of the books in Larsson’s trilogy as two graphic novels. These will be available both in print and digital versions.
The company will release the two parts of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo in 2012. The Girl Who Played with Fire is due out in 2013, with The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest to follow in 2014.
"The intricate characters and stories Larsson created in the Millennium Trilogy are a perfect match for the graphic novel format, where we can bring Lisbeth Salander to life in entirely new, visually compelling ways," said Dan DiDio, co-publisher of DC Entertainment.
Joakim Larsson, brother of Millennium Trilogy author Stieg Larsson, agreed. "Stieg always liked comics and it will be exciting to see the unforgettable characters he created come to life on the comics page," he remarked.
Stieg Larsson died in 2004, before the first book in his trilogy was published. The novels, featuring journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the disturbed young computer hacker Lisbeth Salander, have sold over 60 million copies worldwide.
