‘Mystery Day at ALA’ returns to 2012 ALA Midwinter conference

The PopTop Stage at the American Library Association’s (ALA) Dallas, Texas Midwinter conference will provide the backdrop for "Mystery Day at ALA" tomorrow, Jan. 21, 2012. This series of panel discussions focusing on mystery fiction has also highlighted previous ALA meetings.

Seven sessions will take place Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the Dallas Convention Center’s Exhibit Hall B. A book signing will follow each of these.

The conference website provides this information about the topics to be covered:

  • Harry Hunsicker will moderate "Don't Mess With Texas: Local authors." Rachel Brady, Robin Allen, Deborah Crombie and Laura Elvebak will offer their comments at this 9:00 a.m.-9:45 a.m. session.
  • Contributors to the Jungle Red Writers website – Hank Phillippi Ryan, Lucy Burdette, Deborah Crombie and Rosemary Harris – will discuss "Remember the Alibi: Traditional Mysteries" during their 10:00 a.m.-10:45 a.m. time slot. Carol Fitzgerald is this panel’s moderator.
  • Denise Hamilton, Cara Black, Martin Limon, Laura Elvebak  and moderator Bill Crider will talk about "My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys ... and P.I.s and ex-cops and reporters ..." during their 11:00 a.m. -11:45 a.m. session.
  • "Well, Slap My Knee: What's so funny about murder?" is the topic Joanna Slan, Rachel Brady, Maria Hudgins, Rosemary Harris and moderator Lucy Burdette will analyze at the 12:00 p.m.-12:45 p.m. session.
  • A brownbag interview with Caroline Todd, of the Charles Todd writing team, and Hank Phillippi Ryan will take place from 1:00 p.m.-1:45 p.m.
  • Panel discussions resume with "Don't Fence Me In: Mysteries Set in Foreign Countries," scheduled for 2:15 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Cara Black, Deborah Crombie, Martin Limon, Caroline Todd and moderator Maria Hudgins will participate.
  • Joanna Slan, Robin Allen, Harry Hunsicker, Denise Hamilton, Bill Crider and moderator Hank Phillippi Ryan offer "The Big Roundup: How to Find Out More about What's Happening in the Mystery Genre, Blogs, Websites, Conferences" at the closing discussion, scheduled for 3:15 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
