Both Crimespree Magazine and the Short Mystery Fiction Society have used Bouchercon 2011 as the preferred site for the announcement of their respective Crimespree and Derringer Awards. In doing do, they follow the pattern set by the issuers of this year's Macavity, Barry and Shamus Awards.
Crimespree Awards
Two of Crimespree Magazine's Crimespree Awards were presented at Bouchercon 2011 on Sept.15. According to The Rap Sheet, Hilary Davidson won Crimespree’s Best First Novel Award for The Damage Done (Forge), and Duane Swierczynski received the Favorite Book of the Year Award for Expiration Date (Minotaur).
Derringer Awards
Although the Derringer winners receive their awards at Bouchercon 2011, which is still in progress, the Short Mystery Fiction Society published their names on its website on March 31. The society presented Ruth Rendell, creator of the Chief Inspector Wexford mystery series, with the Edward D. Hoch Memorial Golden Derringer Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Kathy Chencharik’s "The Book Signing" and Jane Hammons’ "The Unknown Substance" shared the Best Flash Fiction Story Derringer. Michael J. Solender’s "Pewter Badge" won the Best Short Story Derringer. B. K. Stevens’ "Interpretation of Murder" and Sean Doolittle’s "Care of the Circumcised Penis" shared the Best Long Story Derringer. Art Taylor’s "Rearview Mirror" won the Best Novelette Derringer.
