Harmon is well known to television audiences. She has portrayed ADA Abbie Carmichael in "Law & Order" and Detective Lindsay Boxer in "Women's Murder Club."
"Angie Harmon is a favorite of crime drama fans," the Hollywood Reporter quotes Michael Wright, TNT head of programming, as saying. "She will bring a combination of toughness and sensitivity to the challenging lead role."
In Gerritsen's series, Jane Rizzoli solves crimes with the help of medical examiner Maura Isles. The role of Maura Isles has not yet been cast.
Janet Tamaro ("Bones") wrote the pilot episode and will be an executive producer, as will Bill Haber and Michael M. Robin. Robin will also direct the "Rizzoli" pilot.
Tess Gerritsen began her Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles series in 2001 with the publication of The Surgeon, which won the 2002 Best Novel Rita award. For Vanish (2005), she received the 2006 Nero award.
Gerritsen's most recent series title is The Keepsake (2008). The eighth title in the series, The Killing Place, will be released in 2010.
