Last night I attended the World Premier of the documentary by Unity Productions Foundation: Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think.
The film explores the multi-year research study done by the Gallup World Poll, which interviewed tens of thousands of Muslims in over 35 countries with predominantly Muslim or significant Muslim populations.
According to the researchers, 90% of the entire world's Muslim population is represented in the survey.
The survey was designed to answer such questions as: Why is there so much anti-Americanism in the Muslim world? Who are the extremists and how do Muslims feel about them? What do Muslims like and dislike about the West? What do Muslim women really want?
As you may recall, the 2008 book Who Speaks for Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think, written by John L. Esposito and Dalia Mogahed, reports the survey's findings and implications. The documentary brings the survey to life, interviewing some of the researchers and other experts in the field.
The film stresses that the relationship between the West and the "Muslim world" should be guided by "facts not fear". And that so far, fear has dominated public opinion in the United States and until recently national policy.
One might wonder how a documentary interviewing academics and other experts about survey data could possibly be interesting. Even I--a former academic who enjoys this stuff--had trouble imagining how it would work. But it does.
In fact, the 55-minute film is entertaining, thought-provoking, and likely to challenge many people's beliefs--both Muslims and non-Muslims--about what Muslims think on issues such as terrorism, democracy, and gender.
That the documentary is both educational and entertaining should be no surprise. The executive producers are Michael Wolfe and Alex Kronemer (Muhammad: Legacy of a Prophet, Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain, Prince Among Slaves). The film was produced and directed by Rob Gardner (Cities of Light: The Rise and Fall of Islamic Spain, Egypt: Quest for Immortality).
Some of the experts who appear on the documentary are: Dalia Mogahed, Executive Director of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies and recently appointed to the Obama Administration; John Esposito, University Professor, Georgetown University; Rami Khoury, Editor of the Daily Star (Beirut); and Kenneth Pollack, Director of Research, Saban Center for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institute.
I especially like how the presentation of the data is followed by policy implications and recommendations. For example, Pollack states that the United States should be "more involved in the Middle East"--but not in the way we have been doing. He gives a nice explanation of what that involvement should be and whom we should be engaging.
The premier itself was entertaining, despite the seriousness of the topic. The keynote speaker, Dr. Madeleine K. Albright, named the first female Secretary of State in 1997 (among other distinctions) said that when she was the Secretary of State, Islamic holidays were added to the State Department calendar and the Department made special efforts to hire Muslims. Someone complained to her about working with Muslims, stating "those people pray 5 times a day!"
Indeed, we do!
The documentary is expected to be released on television this fall. Stay tuned.

Islam is the only cult masquarading as some sort of religion that compels its followers to destroy all other religions and forcibly impose islam. Islam can't tolerate competition, scrutiny, criticism, or ridicule because it is the most violent, decadent and immoral creed on earth and will never be accepted by decent people who understand it. India has had numerous opportunities in its history to rid itself of its cancer-Islam but each time the Hindus got the upper hand over the muslims in war, they showed pity and mercy and allowed their bitter enemies to remain. The muslims went on to grow their numbers and now they pose a significant threat to the native Hindus yet again.
This should be a warning to all of us in the West about what happens when muslim populations become large minorities or majorities in our land. I've seen this same pattern occur throughout the world, wherever muslims have spread-recent examples include the Islamification of Lebanon, Sudan and Serbia.
It's pretty infuriating watching things like this take place and the world does nothing to stop this evil death cult from killing innocents and destroying societies. How bad must things get before the non-muslims finally realize that we're facing death and destruction at the hands of these medieval savages if we do nothing to stop them?
