This week saw new releases from two very recognizable and respected musicians. Both Norah Jones' "The Fall" and John Mayer's "Battle Studies" explore previous uncharted grounds for the artists.
Norah Jones broke onto the scene with her debut album "Come Away With Me" in 2002, receiving acclaim for her piano-sprinkled mellow approach. With her latest release, Jones abandons that trademark low-key sound in favor of a more guitar-driven rock flare. Tracks like "Chasing Pirates" (see below video) show that Jones has developed a bit of an edge - the piano has been replaced by a Rhodes, the drums use sticks instead of brushes, etc. Yet there still appears to be an ineffable element of class that has defined Jones in all her work to date.
In a way John Mayer has reinvented himself with each album - starting with the pop-fueled "Room For Squares" in 2001. In more recent years his work has become more introspective, politically driven, and highlighted by his exceptional guitar skills. His newest release "Battle Studies" seems to focus heavily on relationships (specifically on those that fail); an inspiration he admittedly took from his own life after his brief romance with Jennifer Aniston. The trademark Mayer style is still there, showing evidence of his very wide influences that include rock, blues, folk, soul, and more.
