The top 10 music videos of 2009

2009 is coming to a close so it's time to look back at some of the best... and some of the worst... music videos from the past year.  Here's a list of the top 10 (the worst videos will be in the next article).  A lot of lists like these are made at the end of every year, but unlike many of those this list isn't pretending to be definitive, it's 100% subjective, so feel free to disagree.  Name calling and rants can be done in the comments section conveniently located below.

10. Jamie Foxx feat. Drake, Kanye West, & Dream - 'Digital Girl.'  This one flew a little under the radar.  Probably a combination of no one wanting to be associated with the bad publicity surrounding Kanye and the song blending in with the 60 others featuring Drake.  Despite that it deserves a spot on this list.

9.  Michael Buble - 'Haven't Met You Yet.'  Taking place entirely inside a grocery store this video takes a simple concept and runs with it giving the viewer an enjoyable clip to watch.

8.  Black Eyed Peas - 'Meet Me Halfway.'  The group is scattered across the universe in this catchy clip.  Only Will.i.am could ride an elephant on the moon and not look out of place.

7.  Raphael Saadiq - '100 Yard Dash.'  Another one that didn't get a whole lot of TV time but deserves to be on the list.  Saadiq's old school R&B look and sound is on full display in this video.

6.  Kid Cudi feat. Kanye West & Common - 'Make Her Say.'  If there was an award for best sampling this would have gotten it.  Cudi used an acoustic version of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face" as the chorus.  The video is calm and relaxing in contrast to the lyrics which are quite descriptive, to put it politely.

5.  Muse - 'Uprising.'  Giant teddy bears burst up through the ground and try to take over a city.  Come on, how could this not be included?

4.  John Mayer - 'Heartbreak Warfare.'  A masterfully put together song about relationships with a cutting edge video, what more could you ask for?  By using augmented reality Mayer let the viewer feel like a part of the video.

3.  Jay Z feat. Alicia Keys - 'Empire State of Mind.'  The only slight problem, Jay Z calls himself the new Frank Sinatra.  If this song has that kind of longevity it will be thanks to Keys vocals.  Perhaps she can be the new Sinatra.

2.  Lady Gaga - 'Bad Romance.'  Lady Gaga, arguably, had the best year of any artist in 2009.  This video, her best yet, is completely insane... but in a good way.

1.  Taylor Swift - 'You Belong With Me.'  The reason is arguable if Lady Gaga had the best year is because Taylor Swift had a great one too.  This was her biggest hit released this year, a fun video with Swift getting a play a couple of roles.

*Note to anyone wondering about the exclusion of Beyonce's 'Single Ladies,' it was originally going to be included on the list but upon second look it was released in the fall of 2008.  This list was for videos that debuted in 2009.
